For Year 9 boarder, Campbell Matthews, Cattle Club and Agricultural studies are two key reasons many boarders from Central and Western Qld come to St Brendan’s College.

Campbell, who hails from Condamine is a valued member of the College’s Cattle Club and is enjoying his agricultural and other academic studies.  So much so, that he has been recognized by the College for achieving academic excellence. Clear evidence that he has a bright future ahead for him.  As a boarding school with a strong rural history, St Brendan’s College educates many young men both in and out of the classroom, building morale and nurturing a culture that supports and enhances our boys’ education, holistically into the future.

In 2022 Campbell performed well with the Cattle Club Team at regional Agricultural Shows.  The College Cattle Club attends a suite of regional Agricultural Shows, and this year is no different with 17 shows already locked into the schedule.

“I got my first ribbon last year; I came 1st for Junior Parading at Moura Show.  We camp out under a gazebo in our swags, cook our own food and we get to meet a lot of other students from other schools,” Campbell said.

It comes as no surprise that Campbell’s favourite subject is Agriculture, and although he is from a rural area, he agrees he still has much to learn.

“My favourite subject is Ag.  It reminds me of home and Mr Oram teaches us about fencing and yard building. My family run a fencing contract and feedlot business,” Campbell said.

“The best lesson was when we got to watch Mr Oram shear sheep.  I have never seen that done before.”

Campbell is proving to be an all-rounder offering assistance when Rodeo Club practice days are on, and has also been an active participant in the Rugby League program but says this year he wants to focus on Cattle Club and maintaining his academic achievements.

“I set myself a goal to get an academic award and now that I have it, I want to keep getting one and I want to try and do better with my Cattle Club Parading this year,” he said.

St Brendan’s College is the leading choice for boys’ education in Central Queensland; a Catholic day and boarding School in the Edmund Rice tradition catering for young men from Years 7 to 12. The College is located on 300-acres at Yeppoon and offers a diverse curriculum and extra-curricular program.
